What does “lender-backed” mean on a mortgage?

Short answer“Lender-backed” is marketing shorthand, not a loan type. Every mortgage is funded by a lender; government-backed loans (FHA, VA, USDA) are the ones with a federal guarantee or insurance behind them.

The details

If you see “lender-backed,” ask which lender funds the loan, whether it is government-insured, and who pays the broker. Those answers determine your rate, mortgage insurance and costs.
