How much money do I really need to buy my first home?

More buyers qualify with less than they think. FHA loans allow 3.5% down, conventional loans go as low as 3%, and down payment assistance programs in many states can cover some or all of the down payment. Closing costs typically run 2–5% of the price, but seller credits and lender credits can reduce what you bring.

Should I get pre-approved before looking at homes?

Yes. Sellers and listing agents expect a pre-approval letter with every offer, and knowing your real budget keeps you from falling in love with homes outside it.

What credit score do first-time buyers need?

FHA loans go down to 580 (3.5% down) and some programs accept lower with more down. Conventional loans generally want 620+. Higher scores unlock better rates and more programs.
